EL Open Body Design: One of the most important advantages of the Swarovski EL is its unique use of two small hinges verses one large hinge. This is referred to as an open body design and it has some real advantages. If you make the investment required to own one of these marvels you'll want to use it all the time, and our experience has shown that if a binocular is comfortable to use than it is likely to be used. It's fair to say that the EL is one of the most comfortable binoculars ever built. By removing the hinge from the middle your fingers are now free to wrap around the barrel of the binocular. This full finger grip is comfortable and secure, even in the most adverse weather situations you never feel like your about to loose your grip on your EL. It is even quite comfortable to use with a gloved hand. We often tell shoppers that the EL is the most comfortable one handed binocular ever built. Even if your hands are small it is still possible to use the EL with one hand.
* Twist Up/Down Eye cups: The scientists at Swarovski understand that some of their clients will use the EL binocular while wearing eyeglasses and others will not, so they designed the EL to function perfectly regardless of what your situation is. It uses a unique eyecup that a user can twist inward and outward to set the best eye relief for their eyes. If you use your EL binoculars with eyeglasses you will most likely keep the eyecups in the collapsed or inward position. This is accomplished by twisting the eyecup clockwise until it stops. If you will not be using eyeglasses with your EL binoculars then you would extend the eyecups outward by twisting them counter clockwise.
*Easy Dioptric Correction: While we are on the subject of differences in eyes we should also point out that this unit may also be adjusted to differences in eyesight strength. No one truly has two eyes that have identical vision strength. The Swarovski EL was designed with a right eye dioptric correction adjustment wheel so you may adjust the binocular to accommodate the differences found in your vision. If you wear eyeglasses and your prescription is correct then you may not need to use this feature and can leave it at the zero setting. However, our experience has shown that most people can use this adjustment feature to really fine tune image focus. To accomplish a dioptric correction on any Swarovski EL just follow these simple instructions. Take one of the EL objective lens covers and place it on the right lens. Take a look through the binocular and focus on a subject about 50 feet away. A textured surface like the bark of a tree works well for this process. Using the main focus wheel you will then bring the left side view into perfect focus. Now you should remove the lens cover from the right lens to the left lens and cover it. Without turning the main focus wheel you will need to pull the focus knob outward until it clicks. Once it is in the extended position the focus knob may be turned left or right until the view through the right side is brought into a perfect focus. After this is accomplished you should push the main focus wheel back inward until it clicks. If everything was done properly your EL binocular is now perfectly adjusted for your eyes. You may want to repeat this process a couple of time per year to keep pace with natural changes to your vision. It is also helpful if you remember your dioptric correction setting by noting the correction number listed on the focus knob. This allows you to quickly change if back to your setting if the adjustment was somehow changed by someone else.
